Apply to Be a CollegeXpress Student Writer

Interested in writing for CollegeXpress.com? Read on to learn all about our Student Writers Program and how you can apply!

At CollegeXpress, we're always looking for talented high school and college student writers to join our team! If you love writing, have lots of wisdom to share, and want to build your online portfolio, you should write for CollegeXpress.

Who we're looking for

We’re looking for high school and college student journalists to write about…well, college! Our student writers have the chance to share their advice and personal experiences with their peers on CollegeXpress.com. Students interested in or currently majoring in Journalism, English, Creative Writing, or related fields may be particularly well suited, but anyone with strong writing abilities is welcome.

What you would write about

Basically anything related to college or the college search is fair game: study tips, campus visit advice, internships, the scholarship search, majors, your own college search experience—the stuff you care about. You’ll find lots of examples on the Articles & Advice page of our site.

You can pitch your own ideas or write from designated assignments, submitting on a schedule that works for you. You can contribute as much as you can (most students choose a monthly or bimonthly submission schedule), working with the CollegeXpress Editorial team to hone your writing through edits and feedback. If you're accepted to the program and choose to join, we hope you’ll be able to contribute content ideally for two months—but of course you can stop at any time, do a one-time guest post, or continue submitting articles as long as you like!

Great résumé experience!

These assignments are unpaid (kind of like an unpaid internship); however, you would get ample exposure and awesome résumé experience. CollegeXpress sees around 500,000 unique visitors each month, and our college newsletters reach 700,000 students every two weeks. We’ll also share your posts on our social media channels

How to apply

Interested in applying? You can fill out the form on this page or send a message to ccarter@collegexpress.com, and please include a writing sample (a link, PDF, Word Document, or Google Doc). We’d prefer to see your creative or news writing abilities, so please send along an article, blog post, creative essay, short story, or similar content. We’ll be in touch with you soon after you apply. We can't wait to hear from you!

CollegeXpress helped me find the school I am currently attending by consistently sending me emails of other schools. This allowed me to do research on other schools as well as the one I am in now!

Student, University of the People

I registered with CollegeXpress and filled all my necessary and relevant information as well as the course I wished to study. A few days later, an email was sent to me with a list of schools offering the course; amongst them was the University of the People, the school I got admitted to.

CollegeXpress has helped me explore my views on college in that "why do I wanna go to a certain school" way. It’s helped me explore the best fits in all of these outstanding choices. All these college admission counselors can access my accolades showing them how I could help their college. This source of information helps me show these admission directors who I am and what I'm interested in. Thanks to this platform, my experience for education will be better than most, and I'm so grateful for all that it has provided for me.

CollegeXpress has provided me with tips that were for college students, but as a high school junior, they were still very useful. Not only that, it also gave me an idea of what to expect when it comes to going to college or already being in college. I want to say thank you to CollegeXpress, and I hope you continue the wonderful tips until I hopefully get into college and throughout my college journey.

CollegeXpress has helped me with the college application process. The tips and tricks for important essays were so helpful. I also gained useful knowledge about college life. Even though I’m fully online, CollegeXpress has helped me develop a sense of how college is in person. The experiences from college students that were featured on their Instagram page have shown the good, the bad, and the “secret” life on campus from a reliable perspective. Not to mention, they relieved my feelings of anxiety about the workload. I can now understand how it can be stressful, but it takes self-control and willpower to get assignments completed on time and with quality.
